Tips on Search Engine Submission.

1. Properly Submit To Search Engines

Submit to directories such as Yahoo by hand. Don’t use an automated search engine submission program. Submit to the correct category, and obey the submission guidelines.

Submission is usually through an “Add URL” link. Make sure the information is typed in correctly. If you repeatedly add information, you could cut and paste to avoid typos. It can be awhile before the site gets into the database. You might need to submit a few times before they add the site. However just submit once a week.

If you do use automated search engine submission programs, be sure to check their reputations.

Spam may be likely if you use these services so give them email addresses that you allow to receive spam. Submit your main pages because the search engine will index the other pages from the main page links. Two or three pages is enough.

If you make big changes to the site, resubmit. After the pages are listed, check them on a weekly basis. Sometimes links go awry which means you’ll have to resubmit.

Make your site search engine friendly. Don’t use frames. Pages made by CGI or database delivery might trip up search engine indexing. Make sure the pages are static. Symbols in the URLs may be an impediment such as ?. You may be able to remove an URL too. Dead links will be eliminated. Be sure you cross link with other sites.

2. Find Out About the Search Engines

Concentrate on the big search engines such as Google, Yahoo, Open Directory Project (ODP), MSN, and About.Com. Google is the most popular search engine. Google does not guarantee it will add every submitted URL. Google may get your page through its crawler Googlebot. Yahoo has a crawler. Yahoo allows for the submission of a text file with a list of URLs, one URL per line. Yahoo allows compressed versions of a file.  Be sure to put in the http:/ prefix. ODP http://www.dmoz.org will be indexed by other sites including google. ODP has a list of rules about submitting that should be followed such as making sure your site isn’t already listed. About.com has guides for different categories.  You should contact the guide for your category about submitting a link. Msn.com has a crawler MSNBot that may pick up the pages. However, if the site is not on MSN Search, you may submit. These are free.  Some search engines require manual submission by making you type in a code automatic submission can’t read.

3. Pick the Right Keywords

Try to be specific about keywords. For example , you have a site about dogs. “Dogs” could be a keyword, but it’s too general. “Dog kennel” would be more specific and target a certain area on the site.  Make sure the keywords are at least two words long. The keywords should be in correct places on the page. You can get a keyword selector tool at http://inventory.overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/ You will be allowed a space to submit keywords, but Google says it doesn’t affect their indexing.
